JEFFERSON COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS

Jefferson County Master Gardeners met Aug. 26 at the Jefferson County ISU Extension Office.

President Sandi Dimmitt called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m., with nine members present. Secretary Colleen Bell read the secretary’s report, and minutes were approved. Treasurer Gerri Lyon gave the treasurer’s report, and it was approved.

The fundraising committee reported “Iowa Wildflower Book” sales have been successful and are continuing.

Master Gardeners are taking orders at the Farfield Farmers’ Market for fall bulbs from Dutch Mill Bulb Farms. Sales will continue until Sept. 23 with delivery in early October. Sunflowers in decorative pots also will be available.

Field trips were discussed with tentative dates set.

Members signed up to work at the Sept. 6 1st Fridays Art Walk table and at the Sept. 21 Kiwanis Kids’ Day. A children’s activity center will be set up on Kids’ Day.

The Maasdam Barns Committee announced the irrigation system has been installed and is operating. The project was possible because of a Greater Jefferson County Foundation grant. Kim Keller wrote the grant request.

Julie Johnston reported on the volunteer opportunity Aug. 12 at the Discovery Garden at the Iowa State Fair. The garden is the product of planning, planting and maintenance by members of the Polk County Master Gardeners. Trial seeds are used from the test gardens of Ball Seed Company. Local volunteers were Johnston, Keller, Lyon, Dimmitt and Aleta Mottet.

Dimmitt also volunteered at the Iowa Arboretum booth at the Iowa State Fair and reported on the children’s activities there.

ISU Extension Master Gardener Training is scheduled to begin Tuesday at the Jefferson County ISU Extension Office. Call the office at 472-4166 to sign-up. Keller is the coordinator and instructor, along with ISU professors.

With a drought in progress, members were advised to continue watering trees, shrubbery, young trees and perennials. Updates were given on the emerald ash borer identified in Fairfield. Treatments are available from local tree experts; contact the Extension office for information.

The next meeting will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Extension office.
