JEFFERSON COUNTY RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL

The Jefferson County Unit of the Iowa Retired School Personnel met for a luncheon meeting Wednesday at SunnyBrook Assisted Living in Fairfield.

Following lunch, Co-President Don Kremer introduced optometrist Chris Diehl. Diehl’s topic was diabetes and eye health. According to Diehl, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness for people ages 25-74 in the United States. In addition to explaining the types and causes of eye damage in diabetes, Diehl gave suggestions on ways for diabetics to improve their eye health. They included the need to control blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, weight and sleep apnea. Avoiding high fructose sugar and smoking was recommended, and the importance of making certain a person’s medical records is shared by all doctors involved in a patient’s treatment was emphasized.

The next meeting will be May 28 at SunnyBrook Assisted Living. The guest speaker will be a representative from the Milestones Area Agency on Aging.
