JV Orange swept; JV Black wins Tuesday
The Fairfield JV Orange softball team dropped a pair of home games to Mount Pleasant Monday in Fairfield.
The Trojans lost game one by a score of 7-1, then came up just short 8-7 in the nightcap.
In the opener, Fairfield got on the scoreboard once before Mount Pleasant plated seven straight runs, as the visitors scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Shelby Heston took the loss, pitching four innings of five-run ball and fanning four. Delaney Neil pitched one inning of relief and allowed two runs on two hits.
Offensively, Kelsey Roberts had the Trojans’ only two hits, including a double, and she scored once. Mikaela Amendt, Heston and Ashlyn Elmore also got on base with one base on balls apiece. Kylee Marlay and Madison Mineart reached on a pair of errors.
In game two, the Trojans rallied down from an 8-3 deficit, scoring four runs in the final inning to come up just shy of the comeback.
“The thing I really like about this team is they never give up. They rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the fifth,” said Fairfield coach Lisa Greenig. “The tying run was stranded on third base.”
Amendt started the game in the circle but left with an injury in the first inning, and Neil finished the game. Neil went 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on three hits and striking out two batters.
Aspen Bowman finished with two singles and two RBI, and Heston had two singles and one run scored. Neil slapped a triple, while Paris Bickham and Taylor Marlay had one double each. Amber Samuelson recorded one base knock with an RBI and one steal, courtesy runner Kellie Hovorka scored twice and had one steal, and Olivia Hammel scored and knocked in one run. Jami Nelson tacked on one run.
JV Orange will travel to Pekin on Thursday. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
JV Black wins twice
TIFFIN — Brynna Bowman and Haley Beard both pitched complete games Tuesday to hand the Fairfield JV Black softball team a pair of victories at a Clear Creek-Amana tournament in Tiffin.
Bowman pitched seven innings of two-run ball to pace Fairfield to a 4-2 win over Muscatine, and Beard threw three near-perfect innings to lead Fairfield to a 14-0 victory vs. Clear Creek-Amana Blue. Bowman struck out seven and allowed three hits, while Beard allowed just one base runner (a hit by pitch) and recorded all nine outs via the strikeout.
The two pitchers received plenty of help from their Trojan teammates. Fairfield tallied 16 hits, including five extra base hits, in the nine total innings.
JV Black opened game one with a 3-1 lead after two innings and tacked on a final run in the sixth. Kelsey Roberts slapped three hits, and Taylor Ferrel and Delaney Neil tallied two hits each. Mikaela Lunsford doubled and scored twice, Harley Cook singled, and Shelby Heston and Beard each knocked in a run.
Game two was more of the same for Fairfield — only better — as the visitors earned a 12-run rule victory through three innings. The Trojans scored four runs in the first frame and three in the second before reeling off a seven-run third inning.
From the batter’s box, Sara Trent came through with two doubles, four RBI and one run scored to lead Fairfield. Heston singled, scored twice and batted in two runs; Natalie Angstead hit an RBI-single and scored two runs; and Caytlyn Nystrom scored twice with a single. Lindsey Repp and Bowman also singled and scored. Both Jasmine Elmore and Corynn Klehm walked twice and scored two runs. Brooke McLain plated one run.
Next up for Fairfield JV Black is a trip to Eddyville-Blakesburg today for a 1 p.m. contest.
