Keokuk ends Trojan girls’ playoff run in Fort Madison
FORT MADISON — Fairfield had its hands full with Keokuk in the regional team final Saturday, falling to the Southeast Conference rival 5-0 on Fort Madison’s tennis courts.
Fairfield senior Haylee Gilpin was one point away from winning her match at No. 1 singles when Keokuk ended the dual with its fifth win in singles play. Gilpin led the third-set super tiebreaker 9-7 after splitting the first two sets with Keokuk’s Jenna Kite. Kite won the first set 6-2 and Gilpin won the second 6-4.
Though Gilpin’s match was close, few of her teammates enjoyed the same luxury Saturday.
Sophomore Karley Williams, who advanced to the state individual tournament last week, fell to Autumn Schulte at No. 2 (6-4, 6-2). Fairfield senior Kim O’Carroll lost to Lakyn Boltz at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1) and senior Rachel Hathaway fell to Lexi Kemp at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2).
Courtney Laux also dropped a two-setter at No. 5, falling 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Hanna Kerr lost a tight three-set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-2, 11-9.
