Fairfield resident Terri Kness announced that she will run for re-election as Jefferson County treasurer.

Kness was elected in 2010 and is in her fourth year in office. The primary election is June 3 and the general election is Nov. 4.

“My first three years included many changes to benefit the county,” Kness said in a press release. “I moved the treasurer’s office to be adjacent to the motor vehicle office not only to cross-train employees, but to have a more cohesive team-like feel.”

Kness said the changes she has begun are not complete. She plans to have the entire staff cross-trained next year.

The sitting county treasurer said she plans to start providing motorcycle-skills testing in Jefferson County. Residents must pass a motorcycle skills class to obtain their full motorcycle license, but such tests are not available in Jefferson County. Kness said she’d like to change that.

“Anywhere that I can increase revenue by providing a service, I plan to do so,” she said. “[I want to see] changes like online driver’s license renewal and an eight-year renewal cycles. Any increase in revenue will help our budget,”

Kness said she appreciates the support and positive reinforcement she has received from the costumers she sees in her office.

“We not only help Jefferson County residents but those in surrounding counties quite often with driver’s licenses,” she said. “I intend to continue running my office with a customer service-minded approach, going above and beyond for the customer.”

Kness participates on the Legislative Committee for the Iowa State County Treasurers’ Association. She is married to her husband, Aaron and they have two children, ages 5 and 2. They are members of First United Methodist Church.

Kness has served on the Education Foundation of Fairfield Public Schools Inc., Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk Board of Directors, and assisted with fundraising for the new Fairfield Park and Recreation gym and pool through the spring carnival and upcoming progressive dinner.
