Led by Albert, Comet boys finish third in Packwood
PACKWOOD — Tyler Albert and a talented group of sprinters led the Cardinal boys’ track and field team to a third-place finish at the five-team Ruritan Relays Thursday.
Albert, a sophomore, won both the 110-meter high hurdles and the long jump as the Comets tallied 104 points. Albert ran the 110-highs in 16.30 to edge WACO’s Dylan Carlson by five-hundredths of a second. The Comet sophomore also easily won the long jump with a top mark of 18-feet, 4.5-inches.
Other first-place finishes for Cardinal came in the 4x200 and shuttle hurdle relays. Colt Campbell, Brennen Elder, Nathan Yeager and Mikey Owings led the 4x200 to a two-second win (1:40.11); and the shuttle hurdle team of Jonathan Pedersen, Neil Urtado, Owings and Albert nipped Pekin with a 1:05.86 finish.
Runner-up finishes came from Ryan Cale in the mile (5:24), Owings in the long jump (17’ 9.5”) and Jonathan Pedersen in the high jump (5’ 8”). Cardinal’s medley relay featuring Elder, Urtado, Cody Carter and Sam Pedersen also earned a second-place finish (4:13).
The Comets finished third in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to conclude the meet.
Pekin won its home meet with 194 points and Lone Tree finished second with 115. Behind Cardinal was WACO with 56 points and Tri-County scoring 41.
Cardinal continues its season today at the Dennis Anderson Relays in Bloomfield.
