Library hosts rock, mineral display
The Fairfield Public Library is hosting a special display at its entrance celebrating the Sac & Fox Lapidary Club’s annual show.
The Gem & Mineral Show, with the theme “Rock Art Rocks,” is scheduled for Sept. 5-7 at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
Show chairwoman Betty Morris and her granddaughter Lauren Morris, along with club member Marissa Rupe, prepared the display in the library.
“This year, we have displayed some of the door prizes that we will give away at the show,” said Betty Morris.
Also displayed are creations by club members Florence Stevens, Kay Hazen, Mike Pech and Bill Rathbun.
Rathbun is planning to present a very unique inlay demonstration at the Gem & Mineral Show, and his “Owl In the Moon,” a work of art that took more than 20 years to complete, will be displayed.
The show brings to town unique vendors in gems, jewelry, minerals and rocks and various products of these materials. The dealers will be from Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. The wares available at the show come from all over the world.
As well as the vendors, the show will have more displays of fossils, minerals and rocks.
Indian Hills Community College will have representatives with microscopes at its display to allow people to look deep inside some rock specimens.
People attend the show from across Iowa and from the surrounding states. Last year, more than 40 percent of those in attendance were from outside of Fairfield, said Morris.
