Local gymnasts golden in Winterset
WINTERSET — Nearly half of the youth gymnasts representing the Fairfield Park and Recreation Department placed first in their respective divisions Saturday at the John Wayne All-American Invitational Trampoline Meet in Winterset.
Out of the 12 local gymnasts competing, five brought home gold. Many qualified for the state meet on the basis of their scores from Saturday’s event.
Winners included 8-year-old Kiara Bickham in the Beginner Girls Division, Juliette Pohren in the 8-and-under Sub-Advanced Girls Division and Nicholas Kaska in the 9- and 10-year-old Beginner Boys Division. 12-year-old Bryanna Popejoy won in her Beginner Girls Division, and Olivia McClaran earned a first-place medal in the 10-year-old Novice Girls Division.
A second-place medal went to Maggie Ferrell in the 13- and 14-year-old Novice Girls Division. Fourth-place medals were earned by: Michelle Zhang (9-year-old Beginner Girls), Ella Pollet (11- and 12-year-old Intermediate Girls) and Taryn Scheuermann (10-year-old Beginner Girls). Ashlyn Elmore picked up a fifth-place medal in the 13- and 14-year-old Intermediate Girls Division, and Sarah Swanson received a sixth-place medal in the same event. Kristen Burnstedt placed eighth in the 13- and 14-year-old Sub-Advanced Girls Division.
The team, which is coached by Jeff and Jeanne Ide of Brighton, will travel to Waverly next Saturday for the second trampoline meet of the season.
