Look local first
To the editor:
It is my privilege to serve as the Executive Director for the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce. I started in this position four months ago and continue to have the pleasure of meeting many business owners in and near Fairfield. As we embark on the year’s biggest shopping season, I want to share a story I feel is especially important.
A retail businesses owner shared with me that she, and many other business owners in town, are frequently approached by community groups to give a donation to support fundraisers for a specific cause. And while she feels its important to support youth groups and other community groups, it can be frustrating when the faces coming in to ask for her support are not faces she has seen in her store before.
This story provides an important reminder: please look local first. We are fortunate to have many shops offering a variety of unique products and gift items. But most importantly, when we support local businesses and help them thrive, we help position them to give back and support the community in return. When we invest our dollars in businesses outside of town, those dollars do not come back to support Fairfield.
If it’s important to you have a strong downtown with a variety of stores, then show your support with your dollar. Every dollar you spend is a vote for the future you want to see. What kind of Fairfield are you choosing to invest in?
