Malloy speaking at Toastmaster event
Fairfield Mayor Ed Malloy will share his perspective as leader of a community considered one of Iowa’s economic superstars at 7:30 p.m. March 7 in the Fairfield Hy-Vee Food and Drug Store’s community room.
The free event, titled “Extraordinary Living: A Story of Community Engagement,” is sponsored by the Golden Speakers Toastmasters Club, which invites the public to attend.
“Fairfield is an extraordinary community built on the contributions of some of the most dedicated, creative and entrepreneurial people in Iowa,” said Malloy, who has served as mayor for 15 years. “I will explore the success of our great city and talk about how the passions of our citizens and the leadership structure have created an extraordinary place to live.”
Recognition of Fairfield’s accomplishments has come from many places during Malloy’s tenure. The community was the inaugural winner of the national Grassroots Entrepreneurial Award in 2003, named “One of the 12 Great Places You’ve Never Heard Of” by Mother Earth News in 2006, honored by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability in 2010, featured as “America’s Most Unusual Town” on Oprah’s Next Chapter in 2012 and ranked seventh on Smithsonian Magazine’s “20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2013,” among other awards.
Named one of the nation’s “15 Greenest Mayors” by MSN in 2009, Malloy served on the city council 1992-2000. President of Danaher Oil Company since 1983 and partner and advisor for Fairfield Organics since 2011, he is a founding board member of the Fairfield Entrepreneurs Association, serves on the advisory board of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and is a member of the Maharishi University of Management Board of Trustees.
Malloy holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ricker College, Houlton, Maine. He and his wife of 34 years, Vicki, have two grown children.
Chartered in 1989 by Toastmasters International, Fairfield’s Golden Speakers Toastmasters Club has provided an environment for people to improve their public speaking skills, while winning consistent recognition in TI’s Distinguished Club Program.
Approximately 20 club members meet 7:45-9:15 p.m. every Tuesday to develop their skills. Guests are welcome.
