Michael Fritz wins silver
Trojan senior Michael Fritz earned the silver medal in the discus at the Demon Relays on Thursday in Washington.
Fritz’s toss of 127 feet, 2 inches was more than 12 feet ahead of the bronze medalist. Zach Beason, of Mt. Pleasant, barely beat out Fritz, winning gold with a toss of 127-08.
Out of 31 competitors in the discus, Fairfield’s Tristin Waugh finished 12th (97-6).
In the shot put, Fritz tied for fourth place with a toss of 41-8. Teammate Trenton Hanen finished tied for 14th place with a toss of 37-02.
Among other highlights for Fairfield, Mark Diers took sixth in the 800 (2:20.10), and Guisepie Smith took fourth in the high jump (5-4).
Kosta Papazoglou was impressive in the 200, racing to a sixth-place finish with a time of 25.86. Mid-Prairie’s Terrhyn Jacoby took first place with a time of 24.03.
Fairfield took fourth in the 4x800 (9:16.91) with Diers running leadoff, Max Sullivan second, Darren Roberts third and Drew Martin anchor.
The Trojans finished fifth of 10 teams in the distance medley (4:12.45), just 8 seconds from the bronze-medalist time. Brittan Bowman ran leadoff, Ashton Lankford was second, Diers third, and Roberts anchored.
Out of 12 competing teams, Fairfield took sixth in the 4x200. Sullivan led off, Connor Ryan ran second, Hunter Drish third and Papazoglou anchored. Their collective time of 1:41.10 was just 3.7 seconds from earning a bronze.
Fairfield finished sixth overall in the team standings with 24 points. Mt. Pleasant won the meet with 224 points, Mid-Prarie was second (127), Clear Creek-Amana third (74), Washington fourth (61), WACO fifth (38).
Columbia Community was seventh (22), followed by Highland (13) and Winfield-Mt. Union (5).
