Mount Pleasant tops Fairfield in boys’ tennis
Alexander Punj capped the regular season with a win at No. 1 singles, but the Trojan boys fell in familiar fashion Tuesday at the Fairfield Middle School courts.
Punj, a sophomore, topped Mount Pleasant’s Chase Higginbotham in two sets, though the visiting Panthers won every other match on their way to an 8-1 victory. Punj, who won 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday, has only lost twice this season.
Chance Nicely, another Fairfield sophomore, picked up the first set at No. 5 singles before falling in a third-set tiebreaker. Mount Pleasant’s Blake Wickham edged Nicely 3-6, 6-0 (10-8).
Punj and sophomore Alex Simpson also just missed out on winning a set at No. 1 doubles, falling to Higginbotham and Zach Schmitz 6-3, 7-6(4).
Fairfield travels to the Southeast Conference tournament in Keokuk Monday.
