Moving on to stateA host of Trojans qualify for state meet
A little tweak in an approach can go a long way.
During Wednesday’s practice, Fairfield girls’ track coach Ron Hunerdosse noticed something in the way senior Marisa Repp had been performing the high jump. Hunerdosse and Repp talked it out and made the necessary change.
“She practiced well the day before [the meet],” Hunerdosse said. “I knew in my mind she was going to jump well.”
Jump well she did, taking first place with a leap of 5-00.00 at the Class 3A state qualifying district competition Thursday in Mt. Pleasant. Repp was the only first place finisher for Fairfield, but she is far from being the only Trojan that will compete at the state tournament.
Davenport Assumption and Mt. Pleasant, two of the best Class 3A girls’ track teams in Iowa, made it difficult on the Trojans. Fairfield finished fourth overall [the boys finished fourth overall also].
“Running against two of the best teams in the state and with the conditions the way they were [some runners were forced to perform in the rain and hale], our kids didn’t just show up and put in their times,” Hunerdosse said. “They were competitive and didn’t disappoint one bit. This is one of those times you’re proud to be a Fairfield coach.”
The girls’ distance medley team featuring Repp, Kenady Waugh, Sami Fritz and Mackenzie McClure earned second place with the time of 4:30.23 and will be advancing. Repp, Molly Ryan, Alexis Ring and Olivia Wallerich also will be moving onto state after recording a 1:11.36 in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle. Taylor Ferrel nabbed a fourth place finish at districts and qualified for state in the 3000-meter run with the time of 11:18.63.
On the boys’ side, junior Zane Richmond finished second in the 800-meter run with the time of 2:10.44 and will run at state. With four second place finishes in relay races, Fairfield will send four relay teams to the state meet.
“We really did what we set out to do,” Fairfield boys’ track coach Brian Dunlap said. “We were gunning for the relays.”
The 4x800 team got the ball rolling. Nathan Haerr, Narendra Martin, Zach Martin and Richmond cut 13 seconds off Fairfield’s season best 4x800 time, earning second with a 8:30.80. The 4x100-meter relay team [Laquan Hill, Dakota Nye, Austin Francisco, Jonathan Hoehne], the 4x200-meter relay team [Francisco, Nye, Hoehne, Federico Ferretti]] and the 4x400-meter relay team [Feretti, Narendra Martin, Zach Martin, Jordan Reid] will all be competing at the state meet.
“When you put all the top kids together on the night that matters most, you hope they perform like they did tonight,” Dunlap said.
There are other members of the track squads that had to wait and see until today if they qualified for state. Each individual or relay team that finished first or second in their district automatically goes to the state meet. Another eight with the fastest times throughout Class 3A make it as well.
Fritz was one of those wild cards on the girls’ side. She qualified in the 800-meter run after finishing fourth at districts and in the 1500-meter run after finishing third. Fritz has some of the best times in the state, but stiff competition kept her from winning. She’ll try again at the state meet.
Hoehne barely missed out on qualifying in the 100-meter dash. He finished third at the district meet. Hoehne actually had better times than multiple individuals that will run at state, but those runners were automatic qualifiers.
The state meet begins Thursday in Des Moines.
