Nelson named most improved for Dutch
PELLA — Pekin High School graduate Emma Nelson was recently honored for her contributions to the Central College women’s cross country team.
Nelson, a Central College junior, received her team’s most improved award for the second straight season. She also earned her second consecutive varsity letter for cross country and third including track and field.
In her third season with the Dutch, Nelson often finished second or third fastest on the team. The Pekin graduate came in second at three midseason meets, and she finished third for Central in the NCAA Division III Regional meet Nov. 10 in Northfield, Minn. Her time of 24:24 in the 6-kilometer season finale placed her 64th overall and helped the Dutch to a 12th-place finish in the 28-squad field.
Nelson’s career bests include a 6K time of 23:40, set Oct. 27 at the Iowa Conference meet, as well as a top placing of 13th, earned Sept. 1 at the Central Dutch Invitational.
Nelson was one of 11 runners awarded with a varsity letter at the conclusion of the season. Fifth-year coach Joe Dunham expects to return seven letter winners for the 2013 season.
