No. 2 Notre Dame out-shoots Trojan girls
BURLINGTON — The Fairfield girls’ gauntlet of ranked teams continued Tuesday with a 66-44 loss to second-ranked (Class 1A) Burlington Notre Dame in Burlington.
Senior Sidney Baumann scored 14 points with a pair of 3s, and junior Hanna Greiner had 12 points with six rebounds to lead the Trojans (6-9, 2-4 SEC), who have faced ranked opponents in three of the past four games.
“It was a lot closer than the final score, but they’re a very good basketball team,” Fairfield head coach Mick Flattery said of Burlington Notre Dame. “Playing a team like that will only help us down the road.”
The host Falcons (16-2) hit 12 3-pointers in the contest, but Fairfield stayed close at the start, trailing just 14-11 after the first quarter.
Notre Dame quickly pushed its lead to 21-13 three minutes into the second quarter, yet a 10-3 run by Fairfield narrowed the deficit to 24-23 with two minutes to go in the half. The Falcons closed the half, however, on an 8-0 run to take a 32-23 advantage into the locker room.
Fairfield again clawed back in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 35-30, but one more sizable run by Notre Dame kept them up 47-32 headed into the final period.
Notre Dame’s Courtney Coffin nailed six 3s for a game-high 18 points, and Taylor Hickey scored 16 points off four treys.
“They’re a really good shooting team. This is what you should strive to be like,” Flattery said. “[For Notre Dame] it didn’t just start Nov. 6. They’re taking time to work on that stuff in the offseason.”
Fairfield’s Miranda Metcalf, a senior, finished with six points and six rebounds, and junior Marisa Repp tallied five points with three steals. Brittany Kurtz scored four.
“Miranda Metcalf had a good night for us being the recipient of some good passes from her guards,” said Flattery. “Hanna Greiner continues to develop her mid-range game and defensive game. If she’s not the best defensive player in the league, she’s right up there. You can see the confidence grow for Hanna.”
Freshman Mackenzie Flattery and junior Sydney Burnett both hit one 3-pointer apiece for the Trojans.
Fairfield returns home Thursday to host Iowa City Regina for Trojans vs. Cancer night. The evening will include a soup supper from 5-7:30 p.m. in addition to numerous other events, from a duck toss contest to a 50/50 raffle and quilt auction from the Cancer Exterminator Relay For Life Team. The girls’ game is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m., with the boys’ game immediately to follow.
