Oskaloosa hands Trojan girls first loss

OSKALOOSA — The easier the shots were for the Fairfield girls on Monday, it seemed, the less likely they were to drop.

While the Trojans hit 4-of-10 shots from 3-point land, they made just 14 percent of their shots inside the arc in a 44-26 loss to Oskaloosa. The Trojans’ defense stifled the host team in the first half, but their inability to hit the easy buckets down low came back to bite them in the second half.

“We had a lot of good shots that we could not get to drop,” Fairfield head coach Mick Flattery said. “We had a difficult time scoring by all of us on the inside all night long.”

The Trojans are now 1-1 on the young season. They beat Ottumwa 48-31 in their season opener last week.

Despite the loss, Flattery was impressed by his team’s stout defense in the first half. The Trojans forced 14 turnovers while holding Oskaloosa scoreless for more than seven minutes in one early stretch. Fairfield trailed 6-4 after the first quarter and was down 12-10 at the intermission.

“It was a very good defensive first half from the gals,” said Flattery. “They took away many potential fastbreak layups by getting back on defense and covering for each other.”

The contest remained a defensive battle at the start of the third quarter until Fairfield was hit by a scoreless drought of its own. The Indians ended the period on an eight-point run, increasing their lead to 29-19.

Fairfield’s Marisa Repp scored a team-high 10 points on 2-for-3 shooting from beyond the arc, and she also had four steals. Sidney Baumann scored eight points to go with two assists, while Sydney Burnett made one three of her own.

Senior Brittany Kurtz pulled down eight rebounds, Hanna Greiner and Miranda Metcalf had five each, and McKenna Ledger grabbed four boards. Erica Winslow added one assist.

The Trojans now ready for their home opener vs. Mount Pleasant (0-2) on Friday.
