MOUNT VERNON — A strong start in the field events paved the way for a big day out of the Pekin girls’ track team Monday at the Cornell Co-Ed at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

The Panther girls had top-three finishes in all four field events and turned in several top performances on the track, as well. Overall, Pekin scored 150 points to claim the meet title over several much larger schools, including runner-up North Linn (139) and third-place Marion (93).

Pekin’s Maranda Baker opened the day with a pair of top marks in the throws. Baker tied for first in the shot put with a 37-feet, 2-inch launch, and she doubled up in the discus with a second-place throw of 103-feet, 8-inches. Pekin’s Sloan Reighard finished second and met a personal goal in the long jump with a high mark of 14-feet, 7.25-inches, while Beth Atwood cleared 4-feet, 6-inches in the high jump to claim third place.

On the track, the Panther girls also picked up two wins. Samantha Wright led a one-two finish with teammate Monica Cooley in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing first in a time of 1:14.3, and the 4x800 relay team of Wright, Reighard, Maleaha Earnest and Whitney Horras also won in 10:35.28.

The Panthers also scored big in the distance races as Taylor Lock came through with a pair of second-place finishes in the 3000 (11:57) and 1500 (5:28), respectively. Earnest was right behind Lock in the 1500 with a third-place finish in 5:30, and Gwynne Wright was runner-up in the open-800 in 2:18.7.

Monica Cooley added a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles as she was clocked at 1:16.3, and the 4x400 of Samantha and Gwynne Wright, Reighard and Whitney Horras finished second in 4:23.1.
