Panthers host track meet today
Pekin High School’s Ryan Millikin, Isaiah Wittrock, Sam Roth, Chandler Eckley and Malcom Myers have Panthers track and field head coach Davis Eidahl’s complete attention — and his admiration.
“They have told me they only have one goal in mind,” Eidahl said. “The five of them make up our 4x800 team, and they want to win the state championship. That’s it. That’s the goal. Nothing else will do.”
They’re on the right track.
Their fastest time in the relay, 8:21.2, is currently the top time for any Class 1A squad in Iowa.
“They work so hard at this sport,” Eidahl said. “I admire that a lot. I’ll run any four of them on any given day.”
All five will compete today, along with their Panther teammates, in the 11-team Pekin Ruritan Relays at Packwood. The meet starts at 4:30 p.m.
Pekin is solid in the sprint relays as well.
Panthers Tyler Copeland, Levi Long, Chase Eckley and anchor Monico Requena will enter the 4x100 and 4x200.
“That’s the order we always run them in,” Eidahl said. “Copeland, Long, Eckley and then Requena. They’ve worked together for two years, and they’re off to a very strong start this spring.”
On the individual side, amongst others, Eidahl will be banking on Cameron Millikin, Zach Conger, Trevor Northup, Slater Williams, Dayne Eckley, Kennan Winn and Colton Glosser.
“Cameron qualified for the State Meet in the 400 last year and he’s doing real well again this season,” Eidahl said. “Zach Conger is our best high jumper and we run him in the 4x400.
“Trevor throws the shot for us and Slater Williams enters the shot and also throws the discus.
“Dayne Eckley, Winn and Glosser are freshmen and I like the way they are stepping up for us this season. Dayne and Winn both run the 200 and 400 and Colton is an excellent distance runner.”
