Pekin boys coast to third straight meet title
BLOOMFIELD — Meet titles continue to roll in for the Pekin boys’ track team, which claimed its third outdoor meet of the season Friday at the Dennis Anderson Relays in Bloomfield.
Competing in Class A competition, the Panthers amassed 229 points to ease past a field of four other teams. They won 14 of the 18 possible events.
Pekin’s Eric Adam opened the meet with a win in the shot put (47’ 11”), and Keaton Winn followed suit with a victory in the high jump (5’ 8”).
Pekin’s hot start spilled over onto the track, where its 4x800 team of Graham Wittrock, Cole Reighard, Eli Harper and Cade Millikin won in 9:07. Freshman Austin Fariss also won the 3200-meter race with a time of 11:19.
Other individual victories came from Chase Copeland in the 100-dash (11.55), Christian Wittrock in the 400 (54.19) and Chase Earnest in the 110-high hurdles (16.15). Quinton Garrels added a victory in the 200 (24.28) and Cory Loyd was the meet’s fastest runner in the 400-lows (1:00.28). Cade Millikin earned a win in the open-800, finishing in 2:18.30.
Pekin added four victories in the relay races. Copeland, Winn, Christian Wittrock and Garrels won the 4x100 (46.51); and the 4x200 team of Copeland, Winn, Graham Wittrock and Garrels nipped Cardinal with a time of 1:37.49. The distance medley team made up of Garrels, Graham and Christian Wittrock and Harper finished first by more than 13 ticks (3:58.08); and Kolby Allsup, Tayte Schoff, Graham Wittrock and Winn capped Pekin’s big evening with a victory in the 4x400 (3:56.82).
Also competing in the Class A field was Cardinal, which ended up second out of four teams with a 123-point total.
The Comets earned three victories in the meet and started out the day on fire with wins in two field events. Charlie Rachford earned a win in the long jump (18’ 5.25”), while Josh Ramos was victorious in the discus (116’ 3”).
Later in the meet, Cardinal’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Jonathan Pedersen, Mikey Owings, Tyler Albert and Rachford also earned a win, setting a new meet record time of 1:03.09.
Cardinal returns to Davis County today to compete in the Mustang Relays. Pekin was at the Coe Co-ed in Cedar Rapids on Monday.
