Pekin boys grab two more wins
If the past two games are any indication, the Pekin boys’ basketball team may have finally figured it all out.
The Panthers won twice over the weekend, topping Louisa-Muscatine 49-36 Friday in Letts, then besting Mediapolis 65-52 Saturday at home. Since dropping the first two games to open the season, the Panthers have rolled off three straight victories to improve to 3-2 overall.
“Each game we’ve gotten a little bit better, and Saturday especially, I think we grew as a team,” said Pekin head coach Ken Hutchinson. “We finally dug in with our half court defense and played our best defense we’ve had all season in the third quarter.”
On Friday, the Panthers trailed Louisa-Muscatine 20-17 initially but held firm in the second half. They entered the locker room up 28-20 and held L-M to just 16 points in the second half.
Graham Wittrock led all Panthers with 13 points, while Cade Millikin had 12 points and six steals. Seth Jensen scored six to go with nine rebounds, and Brody Long totaled six points and eight boards.
Wittrock and Millikin also led the Panthers to victory Saturday. Both scored 21 points as the Panthers outscored Mediapolis 38-25 in the second half.
Also for Pekin, Long and Jensen scored eight points each. Petie Clubb nabbed three steals to go with six assists.
The Panthers are back in action Tuesday vs. IMS.
