Pekin, Cardinal grab first wins of season
PACKWOOD — The Pekin girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday, a come-from-behind victory over WACO in Southeast Iowa Super Conference action.
The Panthers, who found themselves down early for the second straight game, caught fire in the second half to eke out a 41-36 victory in Packwood.
Pekin trailed 8-7 after the first quarter and 21-16 at halftime before taking a 32-26 lead at the end of the third quarter. The host team tacked on another nine points in the fourth quarter to put WACO away.
“Again we had a slow first half,” said Pekin head coach Davis Eidahl. “We came out with pressure on the ball in the second half and started running. We have a lot of speed and that threw off WACO’s inside game.”
Pekin senior point guard Cheyann Lankford led all scorers with 15 points, and she totaled five assists and four steals. Leslie Stone debuted with 11 points and 13 rebounds, including five offensive boards. McKenna Gambell scored five points with eight rebounds, and Jessica Horras netted three.
Pekin also received good minutes from many players off its bench. Tiana Slaney, Monica Cooley and Madelyn Baker finished with two points each, and freshman Gwynne Wright tacked on one point.
The Panthers (1-1, 1-1 SEISC North) continue their season next Tuesday at Lone Tree.
Moore leads Cardinal
ELDON — Senior Lindsay Moore turned in one of the best scoring nights of her career to lead Cardinal past Danville in the season opener Tuesday.
Moore racked up 28 points and supplied four assists, and the Comets came from four points down at halftime to claim a 56-53 victory.
The Comets trailed 24-20 at the intermission, until a 19-point outburst in the third quarter handed them a 39-35 lead. They scored another 17 points in the final quarter to win their first game of the season.
Cardinal’s Delaney Ridgway had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards and Schyler Conger scored six. Morgan Honomichl, Leea Ostrander and Lexi Fullencamp netted four points each.
The Comets (1-0, 1-0 SEISC South) head to Central Lee Tuesday.
