Pekin, Cardinal struggle against strong opponentsCardinal loses 3-0 to Holy Trinity
Pekin won its first game of the night.
Sadly for the Panthers, they would not win another. Pekin lost 2-1 to West Burlington and 2-0 to Winfield-Mount Union in West Burlington Thursday.
The Panthers coasted to a 25-11 victory in their first game against West Burlington. A gritty 27-25 loss followed. The third set was close as well, but Pekin fell 15-13. Beth Atwood led the team with five kills and Madelyn Baker pitched in with three.
“Communication was low all night and is something we need to improve on,” Pekin coach Ashley Bartels said. “We have the skills, we just need to communicate effectively and play as a team.”
Winfield-Mount Union, which is currently ranked ninth in 1A, would beat the Panthers in straight games. Atwood and Baker both led the team with four kills.
Pekin’s next game is Friday against Waco.
Cardinal was not able to open its conference schedule up with a victory Thursday.
The Comets lost to Holy Trinity in three straight sets. The scores were 25-2, 25-10 and 25-7.
Mikaela Foecke, who is a 6’4 Division I prospect, made life rough for the Comets. She led the No. 1 ranked Crusaders with 8 kills.
Cardinal’s next game is Sep. 10 against Moravia.
