Pekin girls win Albia meet, boys finish second

By ALLYUS FRITZ/Ledger sports editor | Sep 24, 2013

Gwynne Wright made her presence felt last night in Pekin.

Wright started off her sophomore season on the Pekin cross-country team with a victory Monday at Albia. Wright broke a bone in her foot on May 30 at the state track and field meet. Last season Wright finished fourth at the state cross-country meet as a freshman.

Wright’s teammates didn’t take it easy on her just because it was her first meet back. Shea Dahlstrom and Taylor Lock finished second and third, pushing Wright the entire way.

“Our other girls have been stepping up and running well,” said Pekin cross-country coach Davis Eidahl.

The girls won first overall and the boys were awarded second. Austin Fariss finished in third place on the boy’s side.

“The competition was not stiff but we performed well,” Eidahl said.

Pekin’s next meet would have been Saturday at Lake Darling, but because of construction the meet has been moved to Waterworks Park in Fairfield.
