Pekin girls win Van Buren track meetWright, Linder pile up victories
For the seventh time in as many tries, the Pekin girls’ track team took first place Monday.
The Panthers took the Van Buren Girls Invitational with the score of 155. Pekin pulled off the win despite the larger schools at the meet, including Davis County, Fort Madison and Albia. Iowa City Regina, Cardinal, Clark County and West Burlington Notre Dame also competed at the annual Keosauqua meet.
“This was a very fun and competitive meet for our girls against schools we normally don’t run against,” Pekin coach Josh Roudabush said. “I thought our girls stepped up to the challenge and had a great team effort.”
Pekin displayed team depth by winning the distance medley, 4x100-meter relay and the sprint medley. Kaylee Linder, Sloan Reighard, Taylor Reynolds and Gwynne Wright won the distance medley by six seconds over Albia with the time of 4:33.34. Linder, Mallory Reed, Jessica Horras and Nikole Arendt narrowly won the 100-meter relay by just one second.
“Several girls were asked to step in relays on short notice and did a terrific job,” Roudabush said. “It really shows how much depth we have on the team.”
Individual performances from the Panthers also continued to impress. Linder garnered two wins in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Linder’s 200-meter dash time was 28.37, which was just ahead of teammate Reed’s second place finish of 28.59.
Wright had another winning night as well. She racked up two more individual wins this season in the 1500-meter and 3000-meter races.
Pekin will attempt to win another meet Thursday at Pella.
The Cardinal Comets finished eighth overall and won the shuttle hurdle race with the time of 1:14.17. The hurdle team, comprised of Lexi Fullencamp, Ryley Liles, Sarah Schmidt and Alexis Adam, finished just one second ahead of Pekin. The Comets win run tonight at Mt. Pleasant.
