Pekin JV football wraps up 7-0 season
Success hasn’t been exclusive to the Pekin varsity football team in 2012.
The JV team found its share of success as well and finished with a perfect 7-0 record following a 14-12 victory over Burlington-Notre Dame last Monday.
The Panthers also beat New London, WACO, Pleasantville, Montezuma, North Mahaska and BGM while outscoring their opponents 244-28. They gained 2,641 total yards on offense and held opposing offenses to just 959 yards.
Running behind a physical group of offensive linemen, freshman Chase Copeland paced the Trojans with 1,035 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 77 carries. Jeff Brain finished with 571 yards and four touchdowns and Christian Wittrock had 322 yards and a pair of rushing scores.
Starting quarterback Ryan Swanson completed 23-of-43 passes for 472 yards and eight touchdowns, and backup Brady Donovan threw for 51 yards and three touchdowns. Wittrock hauled in 197 yards worth of passes and six touchdowns, and Colton Lanman had a team-high 234 reception yards with five scores.
Defensively, Cole Reighard paced the Panthers with 103 total tackles and two interceptions. Matt Jones tallied 57 tackles, JD Hollingsworth had 45 and Matt Bollinger made 43 tackles. Swanson had five picks while Donovan and Cole Reighard grabbed two. Wittrock returned an interception all the way for a touchdown.
