Pekin picks up four wins in Sigourney
SIGOURNEY — Pekin wrestling picked up two forfeits and a pair of pins on the road Monday in a 51-24 dual loss to rival Sigourney-Keota.
Thomas Slaney (182) and Trenton Conger (195) both won by fall in their respective weight classes. Brandon Baayen and Michael Hadley earned forfeits at 113 and 220 pounds, respectively.
The premier match of the evening, according to Pekin head coach Al Chapman, was between Austyn Vogel and Sigourney’s Josh Yoder at 145 pounds.
Vogel lost an earlier season matchup to Yoder via 12-10 decision. Monday’s match was just as close — Vogel ultimately fell 4-3 — though he was turning Yoder for the pin as time expired.
“We wanted to see where we were at with one of the best, and unfortunately we ran out of time,” Chapman said.
Pekin, which has a dual meet record of 8-7 overall, returns to the mat Thursday at Class 2A powerhouse Mediapolis. Lone Tree also will be attendance.
“It’s good for some of our kids to take on [Mediapolis wrestlers] and see where we’re at. It’s really a no-lose situation there. Mepo will be going for the jugular and trying to blank us, and we’ll need to give it all we’ve got.”
