Pekin takes error-filled game from Mediapolis
PACKWOOD — Pekin scored in every inning but the fourth Thursday to roll to a 15-8 over Mediapolis in Southeast Iowa Super Conference softball action in Packwood.
The Panthers, who totaled 11 hits in the contest, opened the game with an 8-6 lead and only trailed briefly in the second inning. The Panthers scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the contest out of reach.
Pekin received back-to-back home runs from leadoff hitter Cheyann Lankford and Brittany Gillam in the second inning. Lankford finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI and four runs, and Gillam was 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run plated.
Leslie Stone was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, Emily Adam smacked a two-run double, and Madelyn Baker and Tiana Slaney finished with two hits each. Peyton Atwood batted in one run and Maranda Baker scored twice.
Pekin committed six errors on the defensive end, but Mediapolis was charged with nine.
“We’re doing a good job of everyone getting good swings,” said Pekin head coach Bryan Marlay. “A lot of [Mediapolis’] errors were balls we hit good at them.”
Lankford picked up the win, pitching 5 2/3 innings of relief and allowing one earned run on three hits. She fanned two Bullettes.
Pekin (5-3, 4-2 SEISC North) visits Cardinal today.
