Pekin to hold falls sports preview Friday
Pekin High School has planned a fall sports preview night on Friday to show off its sports teams for the fall season.
The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. in the gymnasium. Volleyball will kick off the show. The varsity team will play and an intrasquad scrimmage, which will be followed by the JV doing the same. First-year varsity head coach Ken Hutchinson is hoping to lead the Panthers to a quality season. Pekin finished 11-11 in 2013.
At 6:30 p.m., introductions will begin on Tom Stone Field. The cheer squad and color guard will be announced first. The Pekin cross-country team, which is seeking a return trip to the state meet, will come next, followed by the football team. The national anthem will be played and any individual from a fall sports team who wants to participate will take part in the ice bucket challenge, which constitutes someone getting a bucket of ice water dumped on their heads to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
The Pekin football squad will scrimmage starting at 7 p.m. The Panthers went 9-3 last season, falling just short of a trip to the UNI-Dome after losing to B-G-M (Brooklyn). Playing in a new district with new many new opponents, Pekin coach Joe Donovan will showcase what his team looks like at the point in the season. Pekin plays Eddyville-Blakesburg Aug. 29.
Admission to the volleyball and football scrimmages will be a sports drink that will be used later in the season by a Pekin student athlete. The football concession stand will be open starting at 6 p.m.
