Pekin, Van Buren to host baseball districts
With the regular season nearly halfway completed, the Iowa high school baseball playoff picture is slowly becoming much clearer.
The district playoff locations for Class 1A and Class 2A baseball have been announced. Using this season’s outcomes as a guide, here is where Pekin, Cardinal and Van Buren stand:
The Panthers (8-4) and North Mahaska will be hosting district matchups for Class 1A District 11. IMS, Keota, Lynnville-Sully, Montezuma, English Valleys, Sigourney and Tri-County will join these two squads. The district final will be played at North Mahaska.
Pekin’s biggest competition in this bracket will likely be North Mahaska, which right now sits at 9-2. Most of these teams are currently hovering around the .500 mark, while Sigourney and Keota find themselves well below.
Class 1A District 10 games will be hosted by Van Buren and Danville, with the latter also hosting the district final. The Warriors (15-1) are joined in their district by only Southeast Iowa Super Conference teams, which are Harmony, Holy Trinity Catholic, New London, Notre Dame, WACO and Winfield-Mount Union.
The Warriors, currently ranked fourth in the state, will likely be the favorite to come out of District 10.
Cardinal (7-7) was placed into Class 2A District 13 with Davis County, Albia, Pella Christian, PCM (Monroe) and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. EBF will host the district matchups. The Rockets currently are just 6-9. PCM (Monroe) and Davis County are the only two teams, with the exception of Cardinal, with a winning record. The Mustangs are 8-7 and PCM is 7-6.
