Pekin volleyball defeats Sigourney
The Pekin volleyball team beat Sigourney in four sets Tuesday with the scores of 25-22, 16-25, 25-22 and 25-23.
After a close first game, the Panthers faltered in the second. Pekin used rallies in the third and fourth games to seal the victory.
“We started off with high intensity and kept it throughout the night,” Pekin head coach Ashley Bartels said. “When we weren’t hitting as well, we made up for it in blocks and digging.”
Whitney Horras dove for a ball during the first game and managed to bring it back into play. Pekin wound up getting the point and winning a long rally because of it. Another diving play by Horras later in the match turned the game’s momentum Pekin’s way.
“We had multiple girls make scrappy plays and showed their will to win,” Bartels said.
Beth Atwood led the team with 16 kills and five blocks. Peyton Atwood came in second in both of those categories with eight kills and three blocks. Horras added in three blocks of her own. Jessica Horras had six kills.
Pekin’s next game is Thursday night against Lone Tree.
