Pekin volleyball falls in Class 2A semifinals
EDDYVILLE — The Pekin volleyball team’s successful run came to an end Friday at the hands of Eddyville-Blakesburg in the Class 2A Region 6 semifinals.
The Rockets topped the Panthers by scores of 25-16, 29-27 and 25-16 to advance to the regional final, where they will meet top-ranked Dike-New Hartford at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Grinnell. The winner of Wednesday’s final will advance to the state tournament.
On Friday, Eddyville led for the first game’s entirety, but it was Pekin who led the majority of game two. The Panthers grabbed their largest lead of the night at 12-5 and led until the Rockets took a 22-21 lead. The Panthers came back to tie it at 24-all, but the host team fought them off for the 29-27 win. Eddyville then overcame a tight start to the third set and closed out the match with a nine-point win.
Leslie Stone led the Panthers with 14 assists and Maranda Baker tallied 11 digs and an ace. Jacinta Cooley led from the net and totaled a team-high three blocks. Cheyann Lankford chipped in two blocks. Emily Adam served up one ace.
The Panthers (16-15) finished above .500 for the second year in a row.
