Pekin wins Van Buren Invitational

KEOSAUQUA — In their final meet prior to the Drake Relays Monday, the Pekin girls looked like a team on a mission competing at the Van Buren Invitational in Keosauqua.

The undefeated Panthers amassed 153 points en route to their fifth straight meet title outdoors. Among their seven event victories Monday were individual wins from sisters Samantha Wright (400-hurdles) and Gwynne Wright (1500-run).

The Panthers also enjoyed wins in five relays, including the 4x100, 4x400, 4x800, distance medley and shuttle hurdle. Taylor Lock was second in the 3000, as was Monica Cooley in the 400-hurdles. Other second-place finishes came from Maleaha Earnest (800), Tayler Winn (400) and Mallory Reed (100-hurdles).

Host Van Buren finished seventh in the field with 27 points and a victory from senior Hanna Haynes in the 100-meter hurdles. Haynes won the race in 15.86 seconds, and she also finished third in the long jump at 14-feet, 3.5-inches.

Cardinal ended up eighth out of nine teams with a final tally of 14. Lexi Fullenkamp, Carly Bennett, Danielle Wycoff and Lindsay Albert had the top placing for Cardinal, finishing third in the 4x100 in 56.06.

Gwynne Wright and the 4x100 are set to represent Pekin at the Drake Relays scheduled Thursday-Saturday. The Panthers also will be attending the Pella Relays on Thursday in their final tuneup prior to the conference meet scheduled May 2 at Columbus. Cardinal and Van Buren will be at the Comets’ Bob Gerard Relays on Friday.
