Philippine Independence Day
The Filipino American community from across Iowa traveled to Fairfield Saturday to celebrate the 115th Philippine Independence Day in the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. Fairfield resident Vilma Thorn, pictured alongside special guest and Fairfield Mayor Ed Malloy, has hosted the event in her backyard for 20 years until this year, when the event’s popularity grew such that it had to move into the convention center. The attendees feasted on traditional roast pig, adobo, pansit, egg rolls, and several other native delicacies. Dance troupes from Cedar Rapids and Des Moines performed Filipino dances and a choral group from Iowa City performed a patriotic musical number.
