The nonprofit organization raises money for breast cancer patients in the southeast Iowa counties of Jefferson, Keokuk, Mahaska, Wapello and Washington.
The organization hosts its annual event in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to auction off donated items, sell T-shirts and serve a freewill offering meal. The proceeds go back to patients undergoing treatment and also fund scholarships to those who have been affected by breast cancer in some manner and are entering a medical field.
Richland Pink Party for A Cure began in October 2008 in Richland. It was founded by Darcy Hackert, Kathy Coleman and Sandy Williams.
Hackert, who was diagnosed in 2004 and then declared cancer free in 2005, wanted to do do something during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to support the community that supported her while she fought and beat breast cancer.
Richland Pink Party for a Cure encourages patients to reach out to the nonprofit group if they need assistance with medical bills or medical-related expenses. The group cannot reach out to patients because of HIPPA regulations.
