Pioneer boys earn third win
The Pioneer boys’ basketball team saved its best for last and topped English Valleys 54-49 in the final game of the regular season Saturday in Fairfield.
Maharishi School led for a majority of the contest, but English Valleys cut the deficit to 52-49 with a minute to play. Junior Rashan Anderson hit a pair of free throws in the game’s final moments to seal the victory for the Pioneers (3-18).
Anderson scored 12 points and Surya Sawhney finished with a team-high 13. Suraj Pullapantula and Avery Mullenneaux scored nine points each.
Maharishi School opened Senior Night on their home court hitting six of their first nine field goal attempts, including three treys, to take an 18-10 lead after one quarter. The home team held a 28-20 advantage at the break after shooting 43 percent from the field in the first half.
The Bears inched within 42-38 with four minutes to play, but the Pioneers stretched the lead on a pair of 3-pointers by Anderson and Lalith Pullapantula, who also set the squad’s JV record for 3s in a season with 26.
Mullenneaux and Sawhney had 10 boards each as the Pioneers pulled down a season-high 15 offensive rebounds. Sawhney dished out five assists, and Suraj Pullapantula supplied four assists.
With a little momentum on their side, the Pioneers travel to Winfield-Mount Union for the first round of Class 1A district play today.
