Apr 08, 2013

CEDAR RAPIDS — Maharishi School scored one for the little guy with a third-place finish at the 2013 Warrior Invitational tennis tournament Saturday in Cedar Rapids.

The Pioneers earned 143 points in the tournament to finish behind defending Class 2A state champion Iowa City West (184) and perennial power Cedar Rapids Washington (151). Other schools in attendance included 2A teams Cedar Rapids Kennedy (105) and Davenport Central (77).

Maharishi School sophomore Sam Stickels turned in a strong performance by finishing second overall at No. 1 singles. Stickels finished just five points behind Saturday’s singles champion Karl Wenzel of Iowa City West.

Also turning in a second-place finish for Maharishi School were Surya Sawhney and Girindra Selleck at No. 2 doubles. The duo nearly pulled off an upset, finishing two points behind Iowa City West’s winning team. In the Pioneer duo’s head-to-head match with the Trojans, Sawhney and Selleck lost a tightly contested battle 6-5.

Daniel Pirc earned a fourth-place finish at No. 2 singles, while the No. 1 doubles team of Raphael Gelfand and Solaris Nite finished third to round out Saturday’s action.

The Pioneers won’t need to wait long for a rematch with Iowa City West. A dual between the perennial powers is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in Fairfield.
