Pioneer girls win crosstown rivalry
Fairfield seniors Haylee Gilpin and Kim O’Carroll won the most lopsided match of the evening Tuesday, but it was hardly enough as the Trojans fell to Maharishi School 8-1 on the Punj Tennis Center courts.
Gilpin and O’Carroll rolled to a surprisingly quick win, winning eight games and surrendering none vs. Maharishi School’s Dia Huggins and Alina Knight. The victory not only prevented the team sweep Tuesday but was the Trojans’ first vs. their crosstown rival in two seasons.
Earlier in the dual, Gilpin fell to Huggins 8-5 and O’Carroll lost an 8-3 match to Jacqueline Leete at No. 3.
Also in singles play, Knight posted an 8-5 win over Karley Williams at No. 3, and the Pioneers’ Flower Shreck held off Rachel Hathaway to pick up a 9-7 win at No. 4. Other singles victories for MSAE came from Sophia Medvedeva at No. 5 (8-5) and Isabel Reed at No. 6 (8-5).
Maharishi School also earned wins at Nos. 2-3 doubles. Leete and Medvedeva took a 8-3 win over Williams and Hathaway, and Shreck and Reed defeated Laux and Kerr 8-6.
Meghan Shelangoski and Madison Soupiset helped the Trojans to three victories over the rival Pioneers in JV play. Shelangoski defeated Kadie Roberts 8-2 and Soupiset beat Kassidy Wang 8-0 in singles action. The two Trojans later teamed up to take an 8-0 victory over Roberts and Wang in doubles.
The Pioneers host Holy Trinity and Albia on Saturday. Fairfield, which has the day off today, hosts the Southeast Conference meet starting at 9 a.m. Monday.
