PELLA — Wins have been plentiful for the Maharishi School boys’ tennis program this season, and Saturday proved no different as the Pioneers rolled to their first tournament title of the season.

Competing at the Pella Invitational, the Pioneer boys finished first among six southeast Iowa schools with a 165-point tally. The host Little Dutch were second with 135 points and Grinnell finished third with 85.

Leading the way for the Pioneers en route to their 165 game wins was the No. 1 doubles team of senior Raphael Gelfand and freshman Chandre Morales. The Pioneer pair won the doubles competition, defeating Pella’s top team 8-4 in the championship match. Maharishi School’s Surya Sawhney and Girindra Selleck placed third in doubles with a close 8-6 loss to the same Pella duo.

In singles action, Maharishi School sophomore Sam Stickels finished second overall and junior teammate Solaris Nite was fifth. Stickels defeated Grinnell’s Will Hamilton, who finished fifth in last year’s state championships, by a score of 8-5. The sophomore then lost 8-4 to Chad Mokelstad of Boone in the finals.
