Pioneers fall short vs. Winfield-Mount Union
WINFIELD — Monday’s Class 1A district opener was the end of the line for the Pioneer boys, who fell to Winfield-Mount Union 63-35 in Winfield.
Maharishi School’s Suraj Pullapantula had 12 points off a pair of 3s and Surya Sawhney finished with eight points as the visitors stayed close to start.
The Pioneers trailed 6-4 midway through the first quarter, yet the host Wolves closed the period on a run. Winfield-Mount Union held a 17-9 advantage after one quarter and scored another 21 points in the second to open up a 38-17 lead by halftime.
Also for the Pioneers, senior Hong Li Liu scored four points and junior Kevin Wu netted three off the bench. Avery Mullenneaux grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Winfield-Mount Union advances to the next round of District 9 action and will play at Keota Thursday.
The Pioneers, meanwhile, end the season with a 3-19 record overall. They return all five of their starters next season.
