Pioneers top Harmony for second win
Two days removed from its first win of the season, the Maharishi School boys’ basketball team claimed its second with a 50-33 rout of visiting Harmony on Friday.
Maharishi School’s Avery Mullenneaux led the way with 12 points and five steals, and Luis Giron and Surya Sawhney also hit double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 10-2 lead after the first quarter, then stayed ahead holding a 41-30 advantage after three periods. Harmony scored the first bucket in the final quarter, but the Pioneers held firm and only allowed one more point the rest of the way.
Also for Maharishi School, Suraj Pullapantula scored nine. Sawhney had a team-high 13 rebounds, Bimba Shrestha had eight boards and five steals, and Rashan Anderson swiped five steals.
Pioneers fall Saturday
DONNELLSON — The Pioneers’ two-game win streak was snapped at the hands of Southeast Iowa Super Conference rival Central Lee on Saturday.
The Pioneers trailed just 13-6 after the first quarter but never could find their collective touch in a 56-17 loss in Donnellson.
The host Hawks led 36-11 at halftime and held Maharishi School to two points in the third to put the game out of reach.
For the second game in a row, Avery Mullenneaux led the Pioneers in scoring with seven points. Suraj Pullapantula and Luis Giron hauled in four rebounds each, and Pullapantula and Surya Sawhney snagged three steals apiece.
The Pioneers (2-4) are back in action Friday vs. Danville.
