Cardinal defeats Maharishi School

It didn’t take long for the Comets to dismantle the Pioneers Thursday.

The final scores were 25-9, 25-4, and 25-8.

“Cardinal had a very strong serve and it was tough for our setters,” Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment volleyball coach Danielle Wallace said.

Wallace believes the team could have played better and will play better in the future.

“The girls were very tired,” Wallace said. “It was like no information came in to their minds at times. They did silly stuff and we made errors.”

Each team plays again tomorrow. Cardinal will travel to New London and MSAE will play in the Burlington Notre Dame tournament.

Pekin defeats Lone Tree in four sets

Pekin bested Lone Tree by the scores of 19-25, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-16.

After losing the first set, coach Ashley Bartels switched up the lineup. Cassidy Tolle entered the game and her aggressive play helped spur the team.

“We started off slow and did not play up to our game,” Bartels said. “After the first set, the girls picked up the play and had a few girls stepped it up.”

Beth Atwood led the team with 11 kills and two blocks. Jenna Swanson had four aces and was served a perfect 22 for 22. Swanson and Cassidy Tolle each had 17 digs. Whitney Horras had 27 assists. Peyton Atwood pitched in with three aces of her own.

“Peyton played big in the middle and kept the blockers guessing,” Bartels said.

Pekin’s next game is at Wapello on Tuesday.

Van Buren loses to New London

The Warriors lost in straight sets to New London on Thursday.

The Tigers are ranked and it showed as they overpowered the Warriors. Alicia Fitzsimmons and Nicole Coffin each had three kills.

Due to a scheduling conflict Van Buren wound up playing Tuesday. They defeated Harmony but lost to Holy Trinity.
