Public hearing Monday for school start date
Fairfield Community School District is holding a public hearing at 6:45 p.m. Monday at the district’s Administration/Curriculum/Technology Center about the start date for school next year.
The first day of school is set by Iowa Code, and for the 2014-15 school year, the official first day of classes is Sept. 2.
Iowa school districts are allowed to submit a request for a waiver to begin school earlier. Fairfield has used the waiver in the past to begin school earlier than the state’s set date.
“A Sept. 2 start date is later than usual, but it is quite possible,” said Superintendent Art Sathoff. “It is my recommendation to start Sept. 2. Options will be presented at that hearing.”
If the school year begins Sept. 2, the last day of school would be June 5, 2015. High school graduation is the first Sunday in June, on June 7, in 2015. Seniors could be out of school a week earlier than June 5. The public is invited to the public hearing, or to contact a school board member to express an opinion.
Fairfield school board members are: Jennifer Anderson, Jeremy Miller, Jerry Nelson, Rich Metcalf, Joe Carr, Kate Van Pelt and Phil Miller.
