Reading council announces writing contest winners
Jefferson/Van Buren Reading Reading Council officials have announced the winners of the Iowa Reading Association’s annual writing contest for local students.
The contest is divided into three age groups for poetry and for creative writing. Winners are chosen at the local level and then sent on to the state contest.
This year in the poetry category, the Jefferson/Van Buren Reading Reading Council had one first-place poem at state by Van Buren High School freshman Sydney Atwood. Fairfield seventh grader Taylor Myers and fifth grader Maya Gottshall were winners at the local level.
Jefferson/Van Buren Reading Reading Council also had three third-place winners at state from Fairfield in the creative writing category. Those winners were third-grader Sarah McAvan, fifth-grader Megan Higgins and sixth-grader Emma Carlson. Second-grader Erin Epperson and seventh- grader Kai-Li Diyaljee were both winners at the local level.
The council had the local writing contest winners present their stories or poems to council members and families April 24. Each student had the opportunity to read their story and stay for refreshments.
“As a council, we were very well represented by these fine young authors,” said Derek Philips, Jefferson/Van Buren Reading Council president.
