Recycled fashion turns ‘eco-chic’
To the editor:
The magic touch of Fairfield fashion design is an effort that includes the whole community.
Weeks of hard work, hours of toil and creativity will ignite the runway at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s Expo Hall Saturday.
Designers at the EcoJam have proven that “Green Style” combines well with fun art – creating garments that are made of recycled, upcycled, vintage or organically and sustainably made materials. This is part of a trend to showcase clothing that is ethically produced and of lasting quality. Avoiding “trash and burn fashion” (and exploitation of workers and the environment) is a priority. The 13 Eco-fashion designers of EcoJam see their mission going beyond art, to include being responsible community members.
EcoJam has been a presence for 21 years in the Fairfield community, starting as a fundraiser to plant trees. This year the EcoJam fashion show will host a trunk show after the event, selling items and accessories which have been admired on the runway. This trunk show is inspired and encouraged by Natural Selections founder Lonica Halley, whose own store (now on Main Street, next to Americus Diamond) was started from an impromptu trunk show after the first EcoJam in 1993.
In recent years, the EcoJam has been adopted by a local group – EcoFairfield, with a focus on creating events which “Serve, Connect, and Inspire”. The fashion show is presented this year with the help of local business sponsors. EcoJam has expanded in a way that includes the Fairfield community as a whole – going from students and dedicated tree planters, to people from every area of Fairfield and beyond.
The EcoJam event team, led by Artistic Director Jami Johnson, has a vested interest in extending the reach of the EcoJam to include the high schools and other community partners, including 4-H clubs and the County Fair. “We are planning a fashion show next year that will include advanced promotion to nearby cities like Iowa City, Ames, Mt. Pleasant, Ottumwa and beyond so that those communities can participate also” says Johnson.
