Residents partake in Healthiest State Walk
Nearly two-dozen Jefferson County residents participated in a statewide walk at noon today around the Jefferson County Health Center.
The Healthiest State Walk Initiative encourages Iowans to “step it up” and take a 1K to a 30 minute walk to help make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation.
“It’s driven by a goal to make Iowa the healthiest state by encouraging organizations, businesses and schools and trying to get people out there walking to improve our health, happiness and to ultimately achieve our goals,” said the health center’s community relations manager Wanda Bagby.
Bagby said health center employees walked during their lunch breaks, while community members also joined in on the walk.
“Some people walked the 1K and some walked the 30 minutes,” she said.
According to the Iowa Healthiest State website, the 2015 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, Iowa is No. 14 in the nation when it comes to being physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy. The ranking has risen since the initiative was announced. However, the overall well-being score has been fairly constant during the past five years.
“They don’t just invest in the healthiest state initiative, they want Iowans to live happier healthier lives,” Bagby said. “That’s what we want at the Jefferson County Health Center, for people to live happier healthier lives — but isn’t that what everyone wants?”
