Richland library plans reading program

Jun 03, 2014

RICHLAND — Readers of all ages are invited to have fun with science this summer during Richland Public Library’s summer reading program “Fizz, Boom, Read!”

The library will be offering programs on Tuesdays throughout June and July starting with Blank Park Zoo’s “Weird Animal Science” on June 10, which will feature live animals.

Other guests this summer will include Dan Wardell from Iowa Public Television, Keokuk County 4-H, the Des Moines Science Museum, Ranger Naturalist Pie Reighard, butterfly enthusiast Janie Hammes and an end of the summer “Mad Scientist Party.”

All of the programs, except for Dan Wardell’s Reading Road Trip, will be held from 3-4 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Richland Public Library and will be followed by story time “Grossology 101” from 4-4:45 p.m.

Dan Wardell’s visit to Richland will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. June 17 at Mother Cabrini Hall.

For a full schedule of dates and times, check the library’s website at www. richland.lib.ia.us or pick up a calendar at the library.

The programs are open to children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Preschoolers can attend if accompanied by an adult caregiver.

The Children’s Reading Club is open to all children from toddlers through fifth grade.

The program rewards readers with incentives based on the amount of time spent reading or listening to books. Children will be able to earn “library dollars” by keeping track of their reading and listening times. The “library dollars” can be spent at the “library store.”

Children completing 10 hours of reading or listening will receive a reading certificate, a free book and coupons to local area businesses.

The Richland Public Library’s Lego Club will continue from 2:30-6 p.m. on Thursdays throughout the summer. Participants can build a Lego creation and display it at the library for a week.

Anyone who has Legos they no longer want, are asked to consider donating them to the library.

The library’s second year of “Free Family Movies on Fridays” will be held on Fridays beginning June 13 and ending July 25, with no movie on July 4, in the library’s meeting room. Popcorn, snacks and a beverage will be served.

A new program “Wacky Wednesdays” will feature a different “do-it-yourself” activity from 2:30-4:30 p.m. each Wednesday. The science projects will range from silly to messy to thought provoking.

The library’s 2014 summer reading program for adults and teens will include drawings for prizes, a teen club and more. Meeting dates and times for the teen club will be listed on the library’s website once they are determined.

All programs are free of charge.

For more information about participating in or assisting with the programs, visit or call the library at 319-456-6541 or check out the website at www. richland.lib.ia.us.
