Ritzman named new chief of Iowa State Patrol
DES MOINES — Iowa State Patrol Capt. Jeff Ritzman will head the Iowa State Patrol.
Ritzman will take the rank of colonel and replace Col. Michael Van Berkum who officially retired Thursday.
Ritzman will be the 16th chief of the Iowa State Patrol. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa and Drake University. He began his career with the Iowa State Patrol in 1982, and has served as a trooper in District 12 (Stockton), a sergeant in District 13 (Mt. Pleasant), a district commander in District 1 (Des Moines), and also served as Basic Academy Camp commander, and in the Professional Standards Bureau and the Division of Intelligence and Fusion Center. Most recently, he served as executive officer to the commissioner. He is married and has two children and five grandchildren.
Van Berkum’s request for service retirement was approved Feb. 20. He was eligible to retire last fall, but chose to retire on March 2, along with three of his classmates from the 12th Basic Academy, held in 1985.
