Sep 13, 2013

ROCKWELL CITY (AP) — A police officer in the small northern Iowa community of Rockwell City was shot and killed today while responding to a standoff, authorities said.

Officer Jamie Buenting, 37, was hit by a single gunshot and died in the early-morning standoff, Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Michael Motsinger said at a news conference.

Corey Trott, 32, of Rockwell City, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

He is being held in the Sac County Jail and information about upcoming court appearances weren’t available.

Officers went to a home in Rockwell City, about 75 miles northwest of Des Moines, after receiving a report Thursday night. Details about the call weren’t available.

When they arrived, no one came to the door but they noted movement inside and arranged for negotiators to be called in.

A tactical team also responded and when officers approached the home about 1:40 a.m., one shot was fired from inside, striking Buenting.

Trott surrendered about 5:30 a.m. He had previously been wanted on a felony assault charge.

Buenting was married with two young children. He had worked for the four-officer Rockwell City Police Department for eight years and had been in law enforcement for 12 years.

Rockwell City is a community of about 1,700 people.
