Santa parade arriving 5:30-6 p.m. today in Central Park
Santa Claus will make his annual Christmas Eve visit to Fairfield, sponsored by the local Rotary Club, today.
Just as he has almost every year for the past 80, Santa and his entourage will arrive in Central Park between 5:30-6 p.m. to pass out treats to children and to take their last-minute gift wishes.
According to parade chairman Karl Metcalf, the parade will beginabout 4:30 p.m. at the Fairfield National Guard Armory. It will enter the city from the west on Burlington Avenue, turn south on Sixth Street, east on Adams Avenue, then south on Maple Street. The parade will circle the SunnyBrook Living Care Center; proceed north on Highland Street, west on Burlington Avenue, north on D Street, west on Broadway Avenue, south on B Street, then west on Burlington to the Fairfield square.
The parade will circle the square and stop on the west side of Central Park.
Plans are for each child to sit in the sleigh and chat with Santa for a few minutes before receiving a small, plastic bag full of treats.
4 candidates apply for judicial vacancy
Four candidates have submitted their applications to fill the 8A judicial vacancy with the 8th Judicial District Court.
Applications were received from: Robert E. Breckenridge II of Ottumwa; Randy S. DeGeest of Oskaloosa; Daniel P. Kitchen of Washington, Iowa; and James R. Underwood of Centerville.
Interviews will be conducted Jan. 3 at the District Court Administrator’s Office, 211 E.Fourth St., Ottumwa. The interviews will be open for public observation and listening. Applicant submissions and materials will be open to the public.
The commission will submit the names of two nominees to Gov.Terry Branstad who will then appoint one within 30 days.
The vacancy occurred when Judge James Q. Blomgren submitted his letter of retirement June 12.
The 8th Judicial District was given permission to fill the vacancy. Applications closed at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Iowa State Fairgrounds debuts indoor soccer facility
DES MOINES — The Des Moines metro area has a new indoor soccer facility at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
The newly installed turf at the Jacobson Exhibition Center features 1-inch all-weather turf, netting, goals and striping for one large field of approximately 76 yards by 38 yards or two smaller fields.
The fairgrounds is partnering with the Iowa Soccer Association to coordinate field rental which is available to all soccer clubs and teams through March 17.
“The new soccer facility showcases the flexibility of the fairgrounds and its facilities,” said fair manager/CEO Gary Slater. “We are pleased to partner with the Iowa Soccer Association to offer another option for the many soccer teams and clubs needing indoor practice fields.”
