Kali Watson, left, an employee of Jefferson County Health Center, receives a $3,000 Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation scholarship from Jefferson County Health Center administrator and CEO Deb Cardin. Watson is one of 34 students from across Iowa who received assistance this year from the IHERF Health Care Careers Scholarship Program. Iowa hospitals established the scholarship program in 2004 to help address the ongoing shortage of health care professionals and encourage Iowans to remain in the state as they establish their careers. In exchange for the financial support, students agree to work one year in an Iowa hospital for each year they receive an award. Hospital leaders from all parts of the state, including Cardin, evaluated more than 100 scholarship applications. “She is so deserving,” said Cardin. Watson said she lives 40 minutes away in New London with her husband Seth and their daughter Veda, but she loves the Jefferson County Health Center, the environment, atmosphere and everyone she works with.
